Women in Manufacturing - Caltronics’ Electrical Assembly Lead - Wanda

In this third installment of our monthlong series on women in the manufacturing industry we touch base with Wanda, who leads our electrical assembly production line. Electrical assembly requires the assembler to be of steady hand and have an objective eye for quality in addition to being able to read manufacturing drawings to full comprehension and handle documentation like certificates of conformance. Wanda has proven to have these qualities and the additional set required of a line lead. Read on to dive briefly into her story as a woman in the industry.

How long have you been in your current position?

I have worked at Caltronics for 6.5 years, and I have been a lead on the electrical assembly line for 6 of those years.

What was your work experience prior to this position?

I started with Caltronics as an assembler on the electrical assembly line. Before that I worked as a production supervisor for a different company in the industry for 9 years. I found that leading in that space was less about working with people than it was managing them, so I ended up moving on.

In what ways have you improved the line (or area) you’re responsible for?

I can recall my number one priority starting as the lead for the line was to cut down on job times and improve efficiencies overall. Back then for various reasons we were hovering around a 68% average on-time delivery for the year and while it was not my efforts alone that caused the change, I’d like to think cleaning up the line contributed to where we’re at today, with last year’s average on-time delivery hitting 99%.

What has been your biggest takeaway from being a leader in the workplace? What do you feel you have gotten out of it?

I enjoy teaching people and enabling them to be their best in the workplace. I’m a natural caregiver, so it’s not just about how well a person can do their job, but also how they feel in the workplace. I strive to create a space that is encouraging and has a team-based culture. I’ve gotten a job I love coming in to out of the deal. I really enjoy the electrical assembly work, and teaching others so they might become better and enjoy doing something I’m passionate about is a bonus you can beat.
