Women in Manufacturing - Caltronics’ Electromechanical Assembly Lead - Shelly
In this next installment of our monthlong series on women in the manufacturing industry we touch base with Shelly, who leads our mechanical assembly production line. Electromechanical assembly requires the assembler to be dexterous and precise with their movements, and be able to read manufacturing drawings to full comprehension. Shelly has proven to have these qualities and the additional set required of a line lead. Read on to hear a brief dive into the story of her career here and earlier.
How long have you been in your current position?
I’ve been with Caltronics for almost 4 years, but I stepped into the lead role about 3 years ago.
What was your work experience prior to this position?
I started with Caltronics as an assembler on the electromechanical assembly production line. Before that, after taking a “Women in Welding” course I worked as a welder for a small family-owned company until they closed their doors permanently. There I learned how to use an array of tools and how to operate big machinery among many other super cool firsts!
In what ways have you improved the line (or area) you’re responsible for?
I’ve brought structure, organization, and better training to my area. All with a smile on my face! I’ve had an especially big year so far for continuous improvement in the department because we’ve been identifying ways to improve work instructions for legacy projects. It has been exciting to see the not only the increase in accuracy and efficiency with how the jobs get completed, but also the quality of life improvements for everyone on the line working on these.
What has been your biggest takeaway from being a leader in the workplace? What do you feel you have gotten out of it?
It feels good to be a leader that people can count on. Training is a strong suit of mine so I like to train people so that they know their jobs/projects well while knowing they can come to me with any questions they have at any time.
